In the 1880s, over 30,000 brakemen were maimed or killed in train service. Before modern labor safety laws, much industrial work was dangerous and difficult.

This picture above was posed the day following No. 460's 1927 exploit in carrying newsreel films of Charles Lindbergh's triumphal reception in Washington, DC to New York City theaters faster than a competing plane. The locomotive is preserved in the Museum's Rolling Stock Hall.
