In the 1920s, the Pennsylvania Railroad carried 220 million tons of freight per year, 138 million passengers annually and moved 5,000 trains per day.
About the main picture above. This picture above was posed the day following No. 460's 1927 exploit in carrying newsreel films of Charles Lindbergh's triumphal reception in Washington, DC to New York City theaters faster than a competing plane. The locomotive is preserved in the Museum's Rolling Stock Hall.
