Volunteer of the Year

Each year, the Friends of the  Railroad Museum and Museum Management select a member as Volunteer of the Year. This individual is also honored by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. This individual represents the high level of commitment and service that characterizes so many of our volunteers.

Volunteer of the Year.Doug O'Brien
has been selected as the Museum's Volunteer of the Year for 2016.

Doug has been a volunteer at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania since early in 2014.  “In the time that he has been volunteering with us,” notes Museum director Jeff Bliemeister, “Doug O’Brien has always demonstrated a friendly and helpful attitude toward our visitors and his peers, as well as a dedication to the Museum’s collection and its mission.  He is willing to lend a hand to any project that emerges.”

Doug spends most of his time at the Museum working on the popular Pennsylvania Middle Division HO layout in the lobby, much to the delight of visitors of all ages.  “They are thrilled to see it run,” he says, “and it’s our responsibility to keep it going the 2,000 plus hours a year it operates.”  He also has been a docent on the Museum’s White Glove Tour and plans to add interpretation of more railroad equipment to his volunteer repertoire.

Doug has been a railroad enthusiast since age 6 when he received his first train set.

Information on volunteer opportunities at the museum may be found here.
