Volunteer of the Year

Each year, the Friends of the  Railroad Museum and Museum Management select a member as Volunteer of the Year. This individual is also honored by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. This individual represents the high level of commitment and service that characterizes so many of our volunteers.

Steve Ferrell.Ken Gunderson
has been selected as the Museum's Volunteer of the Year for 2015.

Ken comes from a railroading family. His father, grandfather and uncles worked for the Southern Railway, and his other grandfather worked for the Milwaukee Road. When Ken and his wife were looking for a place to retire, they were familiar with and chose Lancaster County, in part because of the Museum and its volunteer program. He began volunteering at the Museum early in 2008.

Ken has been described by his peers and Museum staff as welcoming to others, always willing to pitch in and try something new and having a great sense of humor. Ken has tried his hand at cleaning equipment with the curatorial staff and working on various projects in the library and archives. He frequently may be found interpreting equipment in Rolling Stock Hall, usually the GP30 or the H&BT caboose.

“I think the restoration on the caboose is beautiful and I particularly enjoy telling the public about its function. I learn a lot from our visitors. This is a quality museum and a wonderful place to volunteer, and I appreciate the flexibility, the friendly people and the supportive staff. I really feel like I have friends here,” he says. “You never know who you will meet and where it will take you.”

Ken also enjoys golf, modeling railroading with the Capital PenNScalers group and travel. His previous career was as an information technology manager for the Secret Service in Washington, DC.

Information on volunteer opportunities at the museum may be found here.
