Volunteer of the Year

Each year, the Friends of the  Railroad Museum and Museum Management select a member as Volunteer of the Year. This individual is also honored by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. This individual represents the high level of commitment and service that characterizes so many of our volunteers.

Steve Ferrell.Stephen B. Ferrell
has been selected as the Museum's Volunteer of the Year for 2014.

Steve is dedicated, always willing to learn something new, friendly and productive.  He first joined the Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in May 2010 and began volunteering soon thereafter.  He generally spends two to three days in the Museum library, where he catalogues, scans, updates tens of thousands of photos and negatives, and reviews newly-acquired films. He has implemented new techniques that have speeded scanning and improved accuracy.  Additionally, he recently was trained to give restoration shop tours and he contributes articles to the Milepost membership magazine.

Now retired, Steve was a school teacher and school librarian in the William Penn School District for 35 years.  He also was the school’s audiovisual and computer lab director.  His second, long-term career was as a motion picture theatre projectionist and manager.  A native of Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, he is a graduate of Mansfield State University, the father of one son and the grandfather of two boys.  Steve and his wife Jane reside in Exton.

“I’ve always liked trains,” he notes.  “Volunteering at the Museum is just plain fun.  I appreciate the flexibility of the schedule and the interesting opportunities that are available, and really enjoy working with the other volunteers.”

Information on volunteer opportunities at the museum may be found here.
