Railroads
have served the nation in every war since the Civil War, in which
the ability to bring materiel and troops to near the front lines was
demonstrated to military advantage. In World War I, America's
railroads were briefly nationalized to facilitate efficiency.
But never was the role of the railroads
so important as in World War II, when massive amounts of materials
and troop movements across the land were needed. So heavy was
the strain on the railroad infrastructure that many railroads never
fully recovered, thus helping set the stage for subsequent mergers
and service curtailments.
During World War II, railroads
switched their advertising to support of the war effort, as seen in
these selected pictures. The PRR calendar artwork was also used in
other publications. |
