Taking the Swing Train '40s Dance
The giant Rolling Stock Hall at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, Strasburg, Lancaster County, PA, will come alive to the sound of the Moonlighters at the "Taking the Swing Train '40s Dance" scheduled for Saturday, November 7, 2015 from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
The dance will be held in conjunction with the Railroad Museum's annual "Trains & Troops" event, which highlights the role of the railroads both overseas and on the homefront in times of war.
Many of our members and the general public asked us to consider hosting a World War II era dance following the "Trains & Troops" event. The dance will be reminiscent of a USO canteen, with light refreshments and tunes from the Hit Parade for dancing, listening and sing-along pleasure.
The USO (The United Service Organizations) was incorporated when President Franklin D. Roosevelt challenged six private organizations-the YMCA, YWCA, National Catholic Community Service, the National Jewish Welfare Board, the Traveler's Aid Association and the Salvation Army-to handle the on-leave recreation needs for members of the Armed Forces. The USO has endured in its commitment to be America's link with her men and women in uniform and is celebrating its 61st anniversary this year.
Dress the Part!
Guys and gals of all ages are encouraged to attend the dance at the Railroad Museum in uniform or in '40s clothing to help us re-live and revive the past among our world-class collection of trains. Trains and railroads found their way into the music of the era, as they have throughout their time in American history. For example, the song "Chattanooga Choo Choo" spent 13 weeks in first place on the Hit Parade in 1941 and "On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe" was second on the Hit Parade for 14 weeks in 1945.
