“Railroads, Art, and American Life: An Artist’s Memoir” by J. Craig Thorpe explores the past, present and future of rail travel through his fascinating, and much sought after, works of art.  His personal story and paintings depict not only the golden age of train travel but also the role that railroads play in our society today and looking forward.   This 260-page, hardback volume features 130 color illustrations.  The cost of the book is only $40.00 each, or $34.00 for current FRM membersOrder the book here.

Mr. Thorpe will give a presentation and book signing at the Museum on Wednesday, May 10 at 11:00 a.m. ET.  The presentation is free of charge but advance registration is required.  You may choose to attend in person or via Zoom.  Please note that registration is for the presentation only and the ticket does not include Museum admission.  Regular Museum admission rates apply and may be paid at the admissions desk on the day of the visit.  Current FRM membership does apply to Museum admission.  Register for the presentation here.  Learn more about J. Craig Thorpe here.

“The Railroad Photography of Phil Hastings” by Tony Reevy explores the life and work of Dr. Philip R. “Phil” Hastings (1925–1987). Along with his contemporaries, Hastings was influenced by the photojournalistic movement that developed during his childhood and expanded his work from traditional locomotive roster and action shots into a holistic view of the railroad environment. This 224-page hardcover volume features 152 black-and-white illustrations and represents a major contribution to the historical record of the life and work of this remarkable photographer, whose images shaped how we perceive and experience North American railroads. The cost of the book is only $40.00 each, or $34.00 for current FRM membersOrder the book here.

Mr. Reevy will give a presentation and book signing at the Museum on Saturday, September 30, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. during the annual Members Day event.  His free presentation will be for FRM members only.  Registration for this event will be made available in late summer.  Mr. Reevy previously lectured at the Museum during Members Day 2019 on the subject of his book “The Railroad Photography of Lucius Beebe and Charles Clegg.”  Learn more about Tony Reevy here.
